Detailed Description:
Ely is a famous and historic city. It lies in the heart of the Fens, which are a coastal plain in Eastern England. The region is naturally marshy, but most of the fens were drained several centuries ago and this resulted in a flat, dry, low-lying agricultural region which you will see as you are driven through the area. You will also be able to see some of the dykes alongside the fields. These were man-made rivers to provide drainage, along with drainage channels and automated pumping stations.

You will visit one of England's most famous cathedrals. Ely Cathedral was built when Ely itself was only a small settlement and the town grew up around it. The site was founded as a monastery in 673, destroyed by the Danes in 870 and re-founded as a Benedictine community in 970. Work on the present building started in the early 1080s and it became a cathedral in 1109. Henry VIII closed the monastery in 1539 but it has continued to exist as a cathedral to the present day, hence giving this small town its city status.

You will be given a guided tour of this magnificent cathedral, the monastic precinct, Prior Crauden's Chapel and either the Octagon or West Tower. The Octagon Tower is considered a wonder of the medieval world and the taller West Tower offers spectacular views over the city and surrounding countryside. (A reasonable level of fitness is required to climb the towers).

You will also enjoy a look around the Stained Glass Museum, which is located on the upper level of Ely Cathedral. The museum offers an insight into the history and techniques of stained glass and you will experience over 800 years of British stained glass. You will learn the secrets of this ancient craft, glimpse its role in the unfolding story of British history and be given a rare opportunity to view stained glass up close, to compare windows produced at different times, in different styles and for different settings. (Again, a reasonable level of fitness is required to climb the short, spiral staircase). A guided tour of the Stained Glass Museum can be arranged as an additional option.

You will have opportunities to buy gifts and souvenirs in both the Cathedral shop and the Stained Glass Museum shop to remember your special day.

For lunch, you will eat at the Almonry restaurant, which has an excellent reputation for locally-sourced, home-cooked food and will allow you to continue to enjoy the Cathedral atmosphere, as this is a truly unique location nestled amongst the medieval precinct of Ely Cathedral. It is located in the 13th century Undercroft. The gardens are extensive and overlook the magnificent east end of the Cathedral.  Lunch is not included in the price of the excursion in order to allow greater menu choice. However, a £10 per person discount will be applied to your bill.

Another big part of Ely's history is Oliver Cromwell's House. This is the former Lord Protector's family home and the only residence still in existence other than Hampton Court in London. You will experience a guided tour with a costumed guide to show you what domestic life would have been like in the 17th century. You will see a variety of re-created period rooms as well as an exhibition detailing the English Civil Wars. You will visit Mrs Cromwell's kitchen, venture into the haunted bedroom and you will have the opportunity to dress up and play with the toys of the time.

Again there will be an opportunity to purchase gifts and souvenirs of your visit.

You will then go on to Poet's House, which is a charming hotel in the heart of Ely, giving you the chance to experience a little of England's heritage with a traditional afternoon tea. You will enjoy a selection of finger sandwiches, freshly baked warm scones with clotted cream and jam, cake and a glass of chilled champagne to celebrate this special day.

Before returning to Cambridge, you will have the option to return to Ely Cathedral to listen to some (or all) of the Evensong. This is a service with resonant and beautiful words that typifies the English cathedral tradition of choral worship. It consists of psalms, readings from the Bible, an anthem and prayers for the world, the Church and for those in need. It a remarkable and peaceful way to end your day in Ely.
