Detailed Description:
Your day in Suffolk will begin with a tour of Fullers Mill Garden. This is an enchanting and tranquil waterside and woodland garden, situated on the banks of the River Lark. It was created 50 years ago by Bernard Tickner MBE, with his fabulous collection of rare and unusual plants and it is a peaceful and beautiful place to enjoy some wildlife in a very English setting. It also has an ethical background, as in 2013 the garden was gifted to the UK charity Perennial, which is dedicated to helping those who work in or are retired from horticulture, in times of need. Whilst here, you will be able to enjoy a tea or coffee and choose from a selection of delicious homemade cakes (at a small additional cost on-site).

After this, you will be taken to the historic market town of Bury St Edmunds to visit the ruins of the Abbey, set within beautiful award-winning gardens originally created in 1831. The remains of the martyred Anglo-Saxon King, St Edmund, were moved to this site in 903 and his relics and his shrine became a place of pilgrimage. The Abbey was founded in 1020 and was once one of the richest and most beautiful Benedictine monasteries in England. Its remains are extensive and include the complete 14th century Great Gate and Norman Tower, as well as the impressive ruins and altered west front of the immense church.

You will then continue on through scenic English countryside to the Wyken Estate, which was once occupied by the Romans and recorded in Domesday. The Wyken Estate is quintessential Suffolk and you will see country lanes, hedgerows, patchwork fields and woodlands, as well as a flock of Shetland sheep, a small herd of Red Poll cattle and a couple of llamas that you will see as part of the working farm.

You will enjoy a glass of Wyken wine to accompany a delicious 3 course meal in the restaurant, which is housed in a converted 14th century barn and has been in the Good Food Guide for 20 consecutive years, as well as being a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide. The menu is a blend of modern and traditional European dishes and ingredients are either sourced locally or produced on-site.

After lunch, there is a beautiful garden to enjoy in the grounds of the Elizabethan Manor House, containing an orchard of fruit trees, topiary, herbs, roses, box, a pond and water fountains. Here you can see meandering peacocks, guinea fowl and chickens. On weekdays, you can choose to book a guided or non-guided tour of this garden. At weekends, you can leisurely enjoy a non-guided visit to the garden.

You will also have the opportunity to browse and buy something special to remember your day from the country store here, where everything has been chosen with care, from books and toys, to chic clothes, design led pottery and Irish and Scottish woollens. You will be able to purchase bottles of the wines produced here, that you will have sampled during the wine-tasting or enjoyed during your meal, before returning to Cambridge.
